My Role: Design Lead

Deliverables: Copy & Imagery for Nike App

Project Context

Nike’s Designated Market Area (DMA) team requested a quiz experience within the Nike App to help consumers identify which shoe styles best matched their preferences. The goal was to re-engage users through interactive content and drive sales of four key footwear styles. However, the initial brief lacked strategic intent and didn’t fully account for the app’s technical capabilities. I recognized this as a perfect opportunity to incorporate my UX experience and UI expertise to elevate the idea.

Design Process

I collaborated with strategists and developers to assess app capabilities and define how an interactive, UX-driven experience could better engage users. I also partnered with the copy team to develop personas for each featured shoe, adding narrative and intention behind every question and answer. From there, I guided the visual direction—designing a clean, grid-based quiz interface that used photography and color/pattern swatches as interactive touchpoints to create a cohesive, brand-aligned experience.

Phase 01

Pictured: Featured shoe with corresponding quiz answers. Larger text is preferred music genre, as its the most objective and easily identifiable attribute.

With this information provided by the client, seeing ‘Infinity Run’ coupled with ‘rap’ was a major indicator that very little intentionality was put into the thought process.

Phase 02

Pictured: Readjusted answers.

Since the shoes and questions were established, I simply used the shoe as a starting point to create personas, and then readjusted the answers to align. So ‘rap’ was paired with ‘VaporMax’ to create a “modern urban” identity, and ‘Infinity Run’ with ‘country’ for the cheesy yet active “fun dad”.

Phase 03

Client was impressed at the simplicity of the stories created and felt it made much more sense than the original organization.

Outcome

While budget limitations prevented a fully dynamic build, the final quiz drove meaningful engagement and increased sales for the promoted shoe styles. The project validated the power of interactive storytelling within the Nike App and established a framework for future digital activations centered on personalization and user-led discovery.

Takeaway

Pushing projects further may seem fruitless when the outcome isn't what was envisioned, but if a seed is planted for future opportunities, it still counts as a win. Stories can be created in the most simplest of ways to elevate a final product for more user engagement & overall outcome.
